Why Rules Matter…kind of

I hate rules.

Or at least I used to think I did.

I didn’t hate rules. I just hated the rules I had been taught to follow. Those aren’t the same thing.

When I first began questioning rules, it was simple. I wanted to figure myself out.

That opened up the possibility that the things I thought were true might not have actually been.

I was confused, so I began disliking rules.

Then I recognized that people usually do what is best in their minds.

They try.

They make decisions and abide by rules based on where they think they want to go.

In some senses, rules are like guardrails.

You get to decide what your guardrails are.

The tighter your guardrails, the more guaranteed you are to stay on your path.

The less tight your guardrails are, the more you are able to wander.

Wandering can be good for some people.

And it can be very bad for others.
